Six interview questions you’re likely to be asked in your next front-end development interview, and how to answer them
What front-end projects are you working on currently?
This question is a warm-up for the rest of the conversation; there’s no right or wrong answer in this case, it’s an opportunity for you to talk about projects you’re working on at the moment. Perhaps you’re building a new piece of code, or maybe you’re managing a team. Whatever the answer, it gives the interviewer an indication of your experience so far and provides insight into other skills you might have, such as leadership, project management or analytics.
Which front-end development tools do you use?
Why this tool in particular?
Elaborate on why you’ve chosen to work with certain front-end development tools and not with others. If you work with Angular, you’ll understand how the code is constructed, and will likely be able to build it yourself. This is a great thing for employers to know!
Why did you choose to work with React?
Current demand for React is increasing, which means you can expect a question about this. If applicable to you, explain why you’ve decided to learn React. This could be because of technical reasons, or perhaps it’s due to market demand. The latter explains you’re flexible and able to adapt to trends. Technical reasons can be quite personal; perhaps you like working with React because it complements other tools you use, or maybe you just like the way it works. Your answer should demonstrate that you understand when a framework or a library is applicable to the functionalities of a product.
What is your ambition?
Everyone has their own personal dreams and ambitions. When you get a question like this in your front-end developer interview, don’t be afraid to speak your mind. Technology is constantly advancing, meaning that the jobs of tomorrow might not exist today. In theory, everything is possible.
Would you consider yourself to be a front-end architect or a manager in the future?
If you see yourself as a manager, you should have excellent soft skills. Similarly, if you see yourself as an architect, you have the potential to become technically strong. Make sure that you’re giving an answer that reflects your true feelings. Some people say they want to become an architect because they think that this is a better answer, but if it doesn’t suit your personality, you’re not likely to excel in this field. There’s no right answer here – just be yourself!
Remember, you don’t necessarily have to go for an interview to think about your future. Thinking about the above questions can help you to decide how you’d like to develop further in your current role, and can help to guide you when thinking about your future.
